According to the myth, the laurel plant appeared on earth because of an unrequited love: that between Apollo, the sun god, and the nymph Daphne. Having fallen in love with the girl, Apollo decided to approach her and make her run away. During the pursuit Daphne invoked the help of Gaea, goddess of the earth, who transformed her into a laurel tree, a plant that became sacred to Apollo and whose branches were used to crown the heads of poets, heroes and victors (a custom that has continued to this day).
